New research paves the way for more automated welding

MADE Researcher Ioan-Matei Sarivan from DTU - Technical University of Denmark in partnership with Sjørring Maskinfabrik has designed a system that automates the data transfer to welding robots. Similar solutions exist – but this one is unique in being much more attainable for smaller companies.

Today, it is up to a factory employee to manually transfer information about welding points from a CAD 3D-modelling program to a welding robot. This takes time, and is prone to human error.

To speed up the process MADE PhD Ioan- Matei Sarivan from Aalborg University has partnered with the industrial engineering company Sjørring Maskinfabrik to make a software solution.

“Similar solutions exist, but they are implemented on very expensive platforms which are unreachable by small medium enterprises usually,” Sarivan explains, adding:

“Tests done in the controlled environment of the laboratories at Aalborg University, showed us that a time reduction of 80 pct. is possible compared with traditional programming of welding robots.”

A new startup venture

The positive results have already attracted interested customers and Sarivan is currently making a company to spread out the solution. However, he still needs more testing before he can hit the market with the new system:

We have a working prototype that’s being currently tested here at Sjørring Maskingfabrik.

Ioan-Matei Sarivan’s PhD-project is part of MADE’s current research platform called MADE FAST working towards: Flexible, Agile, Sustainable manufacturing enabled by Talented employees.

This video is part of a MADE Researchers’ Baton, where researchers in MADE present their research
and pass on the baton between them, each time posing a question for the next researcher.

MADE FAST

MADE FAST (Flexible, Agile, and Sustainable production enabled by Talented employees) is a new industrial lead research, innovation, and education partnership to develop the next generation of Danish advanced manufacturing capabilities.

MADE FAST will drive competitiveness by enabling Danish manufacturers to produce customer specific products, scale production from small series production to mass customisation, accelerate, support, scale and improve employee training, and develop sustainable manufacturing operations which reduce the environmental footprint of their manufacturing operations.
